Microsoft Dynamics GP: End of support and future planning

Microsoft has announced that support for Microsoft Dynamics GP, a trusted and established ERP solution, will end on 30 September 2029. Security updates will continue to be available until 30 April 2031, giving existing users five years to plan and transition to a modern platform.

Dynamics GP Lifecycle: What you need to know

Dynamics GP has long been a reliable ERP system for businesses. In October 2019, Microsoft introduced the Modern Lifecycle Policy for Dynamics GP, moving away from the previous Fixed Lifecycle Policy. The Modern Policy offers continuous support, including regular updates, bug fixes, and the latest tax updates, helping businesses to operate effectively and stay compliant.

The current version, Dynamics GP 18.5, is governed by this policy. Customers are required to stay up to date by installing at least one of the three annual releases, typically available in June, October, and December. These updates address critical areas such as usability, reliability, and compliance, ensuring smooth business operations.

Key considerations for businesses

As the end of support date draws closer, organisations running Dynamics GP should begin evaluating their options. Here are some important points to consider:

1. Understand Microsoft's support policies
Dynamics GP was previously covered under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, which offered a defined period of support. The Modern Lifecycle Policy, on the other hand, emphasises regular updates, ensuring ongoing improvements. Businesses must understand how these policies affect their current version and plan their next steps accordingly.

2. Assess the risks
Staying on older, unsupported versions of Dynamics GP carries significant risks, including security vulnerabilities and compliance issues. Weighing these risks against the benefits of adopting a new solution is essential for informed decision-making.

3. Start planning early
While there is no immediate need to switch, now is the ideal time to start planning. Software projects can take significant time to scope and implement. Early preparation will ensure a smoother and less disruptive transition.

4. Evaluate all options
Take this opportunity to assess your current system and explore available alternatives, including newer products from Microsoft and other vendors. Reviewing internal processes can also help identify areas where modern solutions could drive improvement.

5. Develop a strategy

Create a clear strategy to determine whether a new ERP solution is necessary, and how best to implement it.

Options for Dynamics GP users

As the end-of-support date approaches, businesses should consider their options carefully:

• Upgrade to a version beyond GP 18.5

Upgrading to a version beyond GP 18.5 can extend your support window for a limited period. However, this will still require investment, and the need to plan for an eventual transition remains.

• Migrate to Dynamics 365 Business Central

Moving to Dynamics 365 Business Central offers a more future-proof solution. With continuous investment from Microsoft, regular updates, and a dynamic product roadmap, Business Central ensures that organisations benefit from the latest innovations without the hassle of complex upgrades. Monthly feature releases and two major updates each year make it easy for businesses to stay current.

Microsoft are offering discounted Business Central licenses for GP customers who choose to migrate to the alternative cloud solution.

There are also migration tools available to partners to bring data and setup information from GP onto Business Central.

Doing nothing could be risky

Remaining on older versions of Dynamics GP without planning a move may expose businesses to risks such as security breaches and compliance issues. Organisations choosing not to upgrade must ensure robust IT security measures are in place, which can be increasingly difficult as new vulnerabilities emerge.

Microsoft’s decision to end support for Dynamics GP aligns with its broader focus on cloud-based solutions. Although Dynamics GP remains a stable and trusted ERP, businesses must start planning their future steps. Whether by upgrading to a newer version, migrating to Dynamics 365 Business Central, or exploring alternative ERP solutions, taking a proactive approach is essential.
